Butterfly Garden Update

Our butterfly garden is...coming along. It is hard to find the right stuff for a shaded garden. And find the right spot for it all. It is sort of expensive, so we buy one thing everytime Jessie gets paid. So it is a work in progress, which is cool because it will give us something to work toward all summer.

Sam is learning so much by doing it. She has learned how to transfer plants into a pot. How to care for them-water them and make sure they get at least a little sunlight. She has learned what kind of plants butterflies like and how and when to change out the banana in the butterfly house, which we decorated and put together ourselves. So far we have 5 plants, in a huge hanging pot. That is our center piece. And then the butterfly house. Next time Jessie gets paid, we are going to add some Marigolds and Milkweed or a Butterfly Bush. Haven't decided which to do first. We have also added some rotted fruit on one of the ledges of the porch. As gross as that sounds, that is what the Cloak Butterfly is attracted to. (Andour Cloak Larva we found on Easter is doing well. It is making its cocoon now and will become a Cloak Butterfly very soon!)

Since we did Samantha's Easter basket in butterfly stuff, I went ahead and sent in the coupon for the caterpillar eggs. I am hoping to get them in soon. (They are on rush delivery so they don't hatch before they get here.) Once we watch them transform into caterpillars, we will let them go on the back porch and hope they stick around, maybe lay some eggs on our fennel. And they are painted lady butterflies, so we are making sure to get flowers that attract them, so they will want to stay.

Front-We decided to prop it open.

Here is the side Samantha decorated.

My Side-And you can see our rotting fruit and out first pot.

Bottom-Samantha can paint pictures now! It is a butterfly, flower, and grass.
